Flash Target Model DK8 MKII

Product Information
1. Flash Target: The flash mechanism is attached to, and comes with, a 20' cable. This cable must be protected from lead splatter or inadvertent shots to prevent its damage. It can be protected with flexible electrical conduit, pipe, channel iron, etc. We recommend using a simple duct tape application across the sensor box for added mounting strength. The sensor is approx. 2" x 1.5 " x 1" in size. The strobe light is 4" x 2" x 2.5". Flash Target comes with 2 AA batteries.

Uses/Video Demonstration

1. Ordinary shooting, practice: The Flash Target is so compact that it can easily be transported with the appropriate metal target to your local rifle or pistol range and set up in minutes. After ensuring you have a cold range and that shooting has stopped, just set up a target of the size you want, turn on the switch and start shooting.

2. Cowboy Action Shooting: You can really put some "flash" in your next big cowboy action shooting match by using the Flash Target in one or more stages. And the spectators will love watching the action when they associate the hit with the Flash.

Man against man competitions: set up a Flash Target by putting one target on each side of the competitors and you can see who hits the target first. No more ties, and the shooters and audience will delight in the action.

3. Long Range and Precision Rifle Events: The Flash Target strobe can be seen up to 1000 yards away with the naked eye. The strobe will go off if the target is hit; no need for spotting scopes or multiple spotters being tied up to score this event. The target only needs to be large enough to protect the sensor, i.e., 2" x 1.5" x 1 . The smaller the metal plate/target the more accurate you have to be. You can also set up a metal target the size of the vitals area and put it behind a life size game animal target. If you hit the vital area the strobe will flash. It would be great practice for the hunting seasons.

4. Police and Military Applications: The Flash Target can be used in both conventional pistol and rifle range training, as well as tactical simulations including urban warfare and police SWAT training. The Flash Target can be used and placed behind an appropriate target in various situations giving an instant result from the shot fired. The metal target only needs to be of the appropriate thickness and hardness for the caliber of weapon being used. In low light conditions, the strobe can actually be used to simulate the flash from return fire so that the student can experience that effect (i.e. when the vitals are hit you know in a Flash).

5. Use as a fund raiser for your club: Put the flash target on a metal disc and place behind the vitals area of a game animal and when the vitals are hit you will know in a Flash, and so will the spectators, that it was a good shot. And your club can charge to shoot at the target i.e. 3 shots for $1.00 …you get the idea

I. Introduction:

Congratulations on your purchase of FLASH TARGET DK8 Mk II. The applications and uses for the FLASH TARGET are limited only by your imagination, so have fun. This durable target system is adaptable to many types of shooting; pistols, rifles and shotguns. It has an easy setup and can save shooters many steps on the range replacing targets or spotting hits or misses. The FLASH TARGET can give your target shooting the high tech electronic capabilities now in use by the U.S. Army, Swiss Military, commercial and law enforcement shooting ranges. Shooting with live ammo, using FLASH TARGET, gives a more realistic training scenario, as the "flash" can simulate return fire.

II. Set up:

1. Installation of Batteries.

Two (2) AA Alkaline batteries are supplied with your Flash Target. For best electrical connection, clean the battery terminals by rubbing both ends with a clean rough cloth.

Make sure the power switch is in the OFF position.  Make sure the TARGET CABLE is not attached to the Flash Target unit.

Slide open the battery door of your Flash Target in the direction of the indicator arrow. Swing door open and place batteries in the cavity, be sure that you note the direction instructions molded in the cavity.

Swing the battery door shut and gently slide it to the closed position. NOTE: DO NOT FORCE THE BATTERY DOOR CLOSED, as the battery door latches can be damaged.

Move the power switch to the "SLOW" position. You will hear a faint hum. This is normal. After several seconds, the test-ready button will glow red, indicating that the unit is ready to fire.

Press the test-ready button. The flash will fire. This should be done two to three times in succession if your Flash Target has not been used for weeks. This will "form" the capacitor of the flash.

When the batteries become weak, the time for the test-ready button to illuminate will increase. If the test-ready button fails to illuminate after 30 seconds, replace the batteries.

Always remove the batteries, if you do not plan to use your Flash Target with in the next 7-14 days.

For additional battery operation information see section VII.

2. Installation of Flexible Leg Tripod.

Attach the flexible leg tripod to the FLASH TARGET DK8 Mk II By simply screwing the tripod into the base of your FLASH TARGET DK8 Mk II. The Legs of the tripod maybe bent into almost any position to achieve a stable base for your FLASH TARGET Mk II. The use of a camera tripod is also an option.

3. Installation of TARGET BOX.

Place the TARGET BOX on the non-impact side of your target, by removing the "white" protective cover from the mounting strip . Set your target at the desired distance.  (Should you choose to apply sensor to another target a new mounting strip must be used.  Additional industrial mounting strips are available from Flash Target, Order Number DK8-004)

The metal target must be the appropriate thickness and hardness for the type and velocity of the ammunition used in order to avoid shooting through the target. Flash Target recommends the use of 3/8 inch thick, 500 Brinell hardness plate or 3/8 inch thick AR500.

4. Installation of TARGET CABLE.

The TARGET CABLE has a plug on each end of the cable, simply insert one end of the TARGET CABLE into the TARGET BOX and the other end into the Flash Target.

5. Using your FLASH TARGET DK8 Mk II.

AT THE RANGE

Set your target at the desired distance.

Connect the TARGET BOX to the Flash Target using the TARGET CABLE.  Always protect the Flash Target System from being shot or being hit and damaged by splatter. The TARGET CABLE should be well protected from splatter by running the TARGET CABLE through a piece of flexible electrical conduit, ¾ inch metal pipe, or under a piece of channel iron, or it can be buried for permanent installation.  DO WHAT IS NECESSARY TO PROTECT YOUR FLASH TARGET AND CABLE SYSTEM FROM BEING DAMAGED.

AT HOME

The TARGET BOX can be attached to a cardboard target and be shot with rubber band guns, slingshots etc. In any event do not use any projectile that will penetrate your paper target or damage the TARGET BOX. Always wear eye protection when using any toy or weapon that can launch a projectile. Rubber band guns are available through the Flash Target web site.

lll. MODES of OPERATION

The "SLOW" mode of the Flash Target will allow for a bullet strike every 5 to 7 seconds. In this mode the electronics will provide a full discharge flash, because of the 5-second time delay to recharge the electronics there will be no false flashes.

The "FAST" mode of the Flash Target will allow for a bullet strike every 1 to 2 seconds. In this mode the electronics do not provide a full discharge flash, thus secondary flashes may occur with each bullet strike.

VII. Problem Solving/Difficulties

What if there is no "flash" when the target is hit?

-          Check the flash unit to make sure the power switch is in either the "slow" or "fast" position.

-          Check for low voltage batteries.  (Press the test-ready button. The flash unit should fire.)  If the unit does not fire replace the batteries.  If your unit will not flash when the test-ready button is pressed, please return the unit for evaluation.  Note, the target box or the target cable may have been damaged.

VIII. Batteries

Non-rechargeable batteries have a finite life.  The batteries chemical makeup and capacity, as well as the power consumption of the device it is used with determine the batteries life.  Alkaline batteries are the most popular.  Super alkaline batteries last longer than standard alkaline batteries in high-drain applications such as with Flash Target.

Rechargeable batteries can be charged repeatedly, making them a good economical alternative.  Nickel cadmium (NiCad) batteries can be recharged hundreds of times.  To maintain maximum storage capacity, batteries should be completely drained of power before recharging.  Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries can be recharged up to a thousand times and are more environmentally friendly than NiCad batteries.  Recharging the batteries without completely draining power does not affect storage capacity.  Also available are re-chargeable alkaline batteries that can be re-charged up to 25 times.  These batteries are more environmentally friendly and longer lasting than NiCad batteries.

Metal Target Specifications
Be sure your metal target is the appropriate thickness and hardness for the type and velocity of the ammunition you will be using so that you do not shoot through the target. We recommend the use of 3/8 thick 500 Brinell hardness plate or 3/8 thick AR500.
